The Long-Term Test: Living with a Kia Seltos for 5 Years and 100,000 Km

Part 1: The Starting Line – Promise and Polish
After six years and 90,000 km with my Kia Seltos GTX+ 1.5L Turbo DCT, the odometer tells a story of ambition versus reality. Bought in the pre-facelift era for its bold looks and segment-first features, it was a solid tank that promised to punch it on the Yamuna Expressway with its 158 bhp turbo-petrol engine. Initially, everything was top-notch: the fit and finish was top, the 10.25-inch touchscreen felt space-age, and the Bose sound system was a revelation. For a family shuttling between Delhi and Karnal, it was the perfect tech-forward cruiser. The cabin, with its leatherette upholstery and mood lighting, aged gracefully, showing minimal wear on major touchpoints like the steering wheel and gear knob even after years of use.

Part 2: The Performance & Practicality Ledger
Under the hood, the Seltos is a mixed bag. The 1.5L turbo-petrol offers strong mid-range grunt, making highway overtakes a breeze. However, the DCT automatic, while seamless in city traffic, has been a source of anxiety for some owners, with reports of overheating and rough shifts. I stuck to the manual, which proved reliable. The ride quality, however, is a known compromise. The suspension is tuned on the stiffer side for stability, which translates to a firm ride over Haryana's patchy rural roads and sharp-edged potholes. It doesn't have the pothole absorption magic of some rivals. Mileage has been consistent: 12-15 kmpl in mixed conditions, which is acceptable for the performance on offer.

Part 3: The Ownership Economics – Servicing and Niggles
Where the Seltos truly wins is in predictable, reasonable running costs. Over five years, scheduled servicing at authorized centers costs approximately ₹18,600 – ₹21,800, excluding wear-and-tear parts. This transparency is a boon. However, long-term ownership uncovers classic niggles. The glossy black exterior plastics, like those on the side skirts, lose their sheen and discolor over time. More critically, the 2021 model year—and some later ones—were plagued by serious engine issues related to faulty piston oil rings, leading to recalls for potential stalling or even fire risk. Any used Seltos buyer must verify these recalls were addressed. Other common gripes include a weak rear wiper mechanism that can scratch the glass and a UVO infotainment system that can be slow and occasionally glitchy.

Part 4: The 2026 Verdict – A Matured Contender in a Tech-Heavy World
As of January 2026, the Seltos has evolved dramatically. The latest model starts at ₹10.99 lakh and is loaded with Level 2 ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, and a 360-degree camera. It addresses many past flaws. For the value-conscious family buyer in Haryana today, the equation has shifted. While the diesel (with its excellent 16-19 kmpl mileage) makes financial sense for high highway runs, its future is cloudy under post-2025 emission norms. The petrol variants, especially the smarter NA engine with IVT, offer fuss-free ownership. With economic sentiment cautious, the Seltos's strong resale and vast service network in the North are huge pluses. It’s no longer the undisputed king, but as a feature-packed, stylish workhorse that has proven it can clock a lakh kilometers with care, it remains a compelling, if not perfect, choice for the region's diverse driving tapestry.

Final discussion: A feature-loaded pioneer that demands your due diligence on service history, but repays it with lasting style and surprisingly manageable running costs.

They praise the manual's reliability, but that ignores the fact that the automatic was a major selling point. The DCT anxiety is a core ownership experience they sidestepped. You can't call a car reliable if you have to avoid a primary transmission option.

Here in Gurgaon, the early Seltos models are already showing their age badly. The faded black plastics and glitchy UVO system make them feel cheap and dated. The "lasting style" claim doesn't hold up when the materials can't last 5 years in our sun.

The point about predictable economics is key for family buyers. In today's cautious climate, knowing your service costs upfront and having a strong resale value is half the battle won. The Seltos delivers peace of mind on the balance sheet.

You've nailed the matured contender status. I just upgraded to the 2026 Seltos with ADAS from my old model. The improvements in ride comfort and tech are massive, but the core reliability I loved is still there. Kia listened to feedback.
