Aam Zindagi, Pulsar Zindabad: My Take on Keeping Beast Happy
Yo, bhai! So you’ve got a Bajaj Pulsar? Solid choice, yaar. It’s like the Delhi auto-wala of bikes—tough, always ready, and gives you that dum when you need to cut through traffic on the Noida Link Road. But like anything we love—be it momos or this bike—it needs thoda pyar.
Here’s my ground-level experience, not from any manual, but from years of kharchi and jugaad with my Pulsar 150.
The Non-Negotiables (Bhoolna Mat!)
- 1. Engine Oil: Its ‘Jaan’Think of engine oil as your bike’s chai. Without fresh stuff, it just grinds to a halt. For our Delhi heat and dust, change it every 2500-3000 km, no matter what the manual says. I swear by Motul 5100 15W50. A bit pricey, but saves you bigger headaches later. The change is DIY-easy—warm up the engine, unscrew the drain bolt, let it flow into an old can, refill. Just don’t overfill!
- 2. Air Filter: Its ‘Pollution Mask’Our air is… special. That filter clogs faster than the Karol Bagh market on weekends. Clean it with air pressure every 500 km, replace every 5000 km. A choked filter means your bike drinks more petrol but runs like it’s tired. A new filter costs like two plates of chole kulche, but makes it breathe easy.
- 3. Chain & Sprocket: The ‘Chakkar’That khar-khar sound? That’s the chain crying. Clean and lube it every 300-400 km. In Delhi’s rainy-humid-dusty cycle, it rusts faster than a cycle left outside. Get a proper chain spray (like OKS). Lift the rear wheel, spin it, spray evenly. Slack should be 20-30mm—check the manual. A tight chain will snap. A loose one will jump off. Both are bad news.
The DIY Stuff You Can Totally Do (Bhai, Confidence Rakh!)
1. Basic Cleaning: Use a mild shampoo, not tap water pressure directly on electricals. Dry it properly. A clean bike is a happy bike, and you spot leaks early.
2. Clutch & Brake Lever Adjustment: If the bite feels mushy, there’s a screw near the lever. Turn it. Feel the change. It’s that simple.
3. Headlight & Indicator Bulbs: Keep spare Philips bulbs. When one goes, it’s a 5-minute job. Just unplug the old, plug in the new.
4. Tyre Pressure: Weekly check! Under-inflated tyres on Delhi’s potholes are a sure-shot way to get a puncture. 25-30 PSI (cold). Invest in a small digital pressure gauge.
When to Go to the Mechanic (Guru Ji ke Paas)
1. Carburettor Issues: If the bike starts thuk-thuk-ing, idling rough, or guzzling petrol. Cleaning and tuning needs skill. I go to Sharmaji in Lajpat Nagar—old school, knows Pulsars inside out.
2. Brake Pads & Discs: Squealing or weak braking? Get them checked. Don’t compromise.
3. Electrical Gremlins: If your console is doing a disco or the bike won’t start properly. Let a pro trace the fault.
4. Any major engine noise: That tak-tak or knock? Don’t open it yourself. Just don’t.
Delhi-Specific Advice (Dilli ki Hawa ka Asar)
1. Rust is Real: WD-40 is your friend. Spray a bit on any bolt, nut, or metal part after a wash or rain, especially during winters.
2. Parking: If you can, get a cover. The sun bleaches the paint, the dust gets everywhere, and bhai, you never know when a pigeon will decide your bike is its toilet.
3. Fuel: Stick to one decent petrol pump. I use the Indian Oil one near my office. Consistent quality matters for the carb/FI.
Final Dilli-Dil Se Review
Treat it like a tough but loyal friend. Give it regular sevai. Don’t ignore the small sounds. And it will be your partner through every chaotic, beautiful Delhi ride—from the smooth Rajpath to the broken patches of Ring Road.
Ride safe, wear a helmet (a good one!), and keep the revs high! 🏍️

Meri bike ab bhi nayi jaisi chalti hai. Kyun? Kyunki main 15 saal se wahi karta hoon jo tumne likha hai. Regular oil, filter, chain. Bas. Electrical issue aaya to mechanic ke paas le gaya. Aaj kal ke ladke modification karte hain, fir rona. Bike simple rakho, wo tumhe simple jawab degi. Aur petrol pump wala point... bilkul sahi. Main ek hi pump se 10 saal se petrol bharwa raha hoon. Bhaiya ab mujhe discount bhi deta hai.

Bhai, tumhari baat mein dum hai. Mera Pulsar mera rozi-roti ka saathi hai. Din ka 150-200 km. Main har 2000 km pe oil change karta hoon—yeh dhilli nahi de sakta. Air filter? Main mahine mein ek baar saaf karta hoon, 3 mahine mein naya lagata hoon. Mere liye yeh cost nahi, investment hai. Agar bike bandh ho gayi, to mera din bandh. 'WD-40 rust' wala tip achha hai. Monsoon ke baad zaroor karta hoon. Aur cover? Haan bhai, Dilli ki chidiyaan bada khatarnak hain!

Beta, tu sahi bol raha hai. 'Engine oil is its chai'—bahut sahi! Log 5000 km tak same oil chalate hain, fir engine ka sawan bajta hai. Aur chain... haan! Delhi mein mitti, pani, namak... teeno milke chain ko mar dete hain. Main har hafte aise bikes dekhta hoon. Tere '20-30mm slack' wala point important hai. Log ya to kaat dete hain ya to dheela chhod dete hain. Dono galat. Aur haan, carburettor ke liye mujhe hi le aana. Online videos dekh ke tune kiya to bhoom! ho jaega.
